**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I prepared to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who has always been introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on the academic year, I recognize a time of substantial personal development, challenges, and numerous joyful experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Friend-Making Challenge

One of the most daunting challenges of starting university was befriending others. If you’re a future student, this is likely a concern for you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like family.

What changed? It all began with simple actions, such as sparking casual conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar situations. I learned that taking an early leap of faith is crucial. If you’re not fully prepared to put yourself out there, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a diverse student body at university, you’re sure to discover those who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Another notable challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first to the second term felt even larger. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re lagging behind.

What assisted me in navigating this challenge was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial lesson here is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the academic staff. This has become one of the most valuable lessons I gleaned during my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### Encouraging Staff and Pastoral Support

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and understand the difficulties we confront. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication channels to address our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support available until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had accessed it earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, allowing me to form connections with staff members. This proved to be a rewarding experience, and I urge others to seize similar opportunities. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, developing relationships with the staff can significantly influence your experience. My main takeaway? Don’t shy away from utilizing the resources and support systems present—you can never receive too much help!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting back, this year has enlightened me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during my university journey—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive range of support available from staff and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated. More importantly, I’ve discerned how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while indulging in moments of joy and satisfaction.

University is a pathway of development, and while the obstacles may initially appear formidable, they present chances to learn, bond, and excel.
