**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Being inherently timid and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt like a significant challenge. Reflecting on this academic year filled with personal development, hurdles, and unforgettable moments, I appreciate how much I’ve grown and how far I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered initially was forging friendships. This is a common concern for many incoming students, and I wasn’t immune to it. On my first day in student accommodation, just before classes kicked off, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. My companions at Imperial have become like a second family to me. It all began with simple chats with others who were equally anxious.

What did I discover? I realized that taking a leap of faith at the beginning of the year is vital. It’s completely fine if you’re not ready to connect immediately! There will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I found that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the sophistication of the course material. There was a distinct elevation from A-levels to university studies, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when witnessing others study and pondering whether you’re on track.

What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is in the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp something, it’s likely that others are too. The essential lesson here is to reach out for assistance. This was perhaps the most crucial takeaway from my first year. Whether it’s contacting your classmates or seeking help from staff, expressing the need for help is vital.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of staff, the backing from the Materials Science department has been remarkable. The faculty members genuinely wish for students to thrive and are fully aware of the challenges we encounter. They empathize with our experiences and keep communication lines open throughout the year to address any issues.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the start of the year, I took a step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to establish valuable connections with staff members. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available—it exists to help you, and you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has illustrated that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was largely unwarranted. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, those worries can be mitigated. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that enjoying university life amid the demands of exams and deadlines is entirely possible.

This year has represented a journey of personal development, and I take pride in my progress. To anyone preparing to begin their university adventure soon, remember to embrace those leaps of faith, seek assistance when necessary, and above all, stay true to yourself.
