**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I initiated a venture that inundated me with apprehension, trepidation, and uncertainty. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. For someone who had always been introverted and discreet, plunging into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on my first year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of entering university was forging friendships. If you are a prospective student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
At Imperial and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It required just a bit of casual conversation with individuals who were equally apprehensive as I was. What I’ve grasped is that taking an early leap of faith is priceless. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease right away, that’s perfectly alright! There will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most crucially, I’ve come to understand that being true to yourself is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your passions and principles.
### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic demands and the intricacy of the course content was yet another major obstacle. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others study and presuming they’re excelling more than you.
What aided me in navigating these difficulties was the reassurance that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having trouble grasping something, it’s likely that others are facing the same issues. The most significant lesson I absorbed in my first year was to reach out for assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, seeking help can significantly impact your experience.
### Establishing Connections with Educators
Regarding staff, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and support personnel genuinely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They keep channels of communication open throughout the year, addressing any worries we might have.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. Early in the year, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to forge relationships with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are countless ways to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway here is to fully utilize the support available to you—there is no such thing as too much assistance!
### Main Insights
Upon reflection, this year has illuminated that the apprehension I felt before embarking on university—and even during the year—was frequently unfounded. With the array of support options from both faculty and fellow students, there’s always someone to rely on. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly solitary and that it’s feasible to relish university life even amidst the stresses of examinations and deadlines.
This inaugural year has been a transformative journey, and I’m looking forward to what the future has in store as I proceed with my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
