**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and timid, plunging into this new chapter seemed intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments, I can appreciate the vast knowledge I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might be a major concern for you as well. On my first day at student housing, a few days prior to the term beginning, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like family.
What aided me was taking minor steps, such as engaging in light conversation with others who were equally anxious. I discovered that embracing uncertainty at the year’s outset is always beneficial. And if you’re not ready immediately, don’t fret—there are myriad icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse crowd at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the academic demands and rigor was another major obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your competence when observing others study and wondering if you’re measuring up.
What helped me tackle these challenges was the realization that I wasn’t isolated in this experience. Everyone shared the same struggles, and if I was confused about something, it was likely that others were too. The most invaluable lesson I learned was to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, reaching out for help can make a tremendous difference.
### The Outstanding Support from Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering department are absolutely exceptional. They sincerely care about students’ success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our worries and providing support.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to form relationships with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway is to make the most of the resources and support available—you can never have an excess of assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt before and during university was frequently unwarranted. With the broad spectrum of support available from faculty and fellow students, there’s always help at hand. This year has taught me that I’m never truly on my own and that it’s possible to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and fun.
As I progress, I’m thankful for the personal development, friendships, and experiences that have enriched my first year. To anyone embarking on their own university path: take the plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. You’ve got this!
