**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was about to commence my venture as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always tended to be quiet and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar was a formidable challenge. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
### Taking the Leap: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting aspects I encountered was the task of making friends. Commencing university can be quite overwhelming, particularly when entering a setting filled with unknown faces. On my first day in the student residence, just days before classes started, I spent the entire time confined to my room, too apprehensive to venture out and make introductions. Fast forward to the present, and I am pleased to report that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had.
The secret was taking that initial step—starting brief conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings. Gradually, those small interactions blossomed into significant connections, and now I feel as though I have discovered a second family here at Imperial. If you’re a prospective student anxious about forming friendships, rest assured that you’re not alone. Numerous icebreaker events and chances to socialize will be available. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet people who share your passions and ideals.
### Confronting the Academic Demands
Another challenge I had to navigate was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more demanding. It’s easy to feel like you’re in over your head or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others seemingly flourishing.
What proved most beneficial for me was understanding that I wasn’t the only one feeling this way. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were facing similar difficulties. The most valuable lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This straightforward action created a substantial impact and is something I would recommend to any first-year student.
### Assistance from Faculty
One of the most remarkable elements of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science and Engineering faculty. They genuinely care about students’ success and are always willing to listen to our concerns. Their compassion and ongoing communication have been priceless.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not reaching out sooner. Early on, I took a plunge by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to cultivate connections with staff members. This turned out to be an extremely gratifying experience. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, familiarizing yourself with faculty is one of the best things you can do for your well-being. My suggestion? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on this year, it has taught me that many of the concerns I had—both prior to and during university—were baseless. With the ample support available from faculty and fellow students, I came to realize I was never truly alone. I also learned to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun.
In summary, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It’s been a process of stretching beyond my comfort zone, facing challenges, and uncovering the wonderful community surrounding me. If you’re about to begin your own university adventure, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious—but also recognize that you are capable of thriving in ways you might not have anticipated.
