**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted, diving into this new experience felt quite intimidating. Now, as I look back on an academic year brimming with growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Overcoming the Anxiety of Finding Friends
A particularly daunting challenge I encountered was the task of making friends. Beginning university can create significant anxiety, and if you’re an incoming student, this may pose one of your largest worries. On my first day at my student accommodation, just prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day secluding myself in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to the present, and I can say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. These connections have turned into a second family for me, both within my program and across the campus. The key was stepping outside of my comfort zone and engaging in simple conversations with those who were in a similar situation.

What did this teach me? Firstly, it’s definitely worthwhile to take that initial leap at the beginning of the year, even when it feels uncomfortable. If you’re not quite prepared, don’t despair—there are many icebreaker events and venues to meet others. Secondly, being true to yourself is vital. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Confronting the Academic Shift
Another significant challenge was the adjustment to the increased workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It can be easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others studying effectively.

What helped me navigate this was understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping certain concepts, others likely are too. The essential lesson is to seek assistance—this could be the most critical realization I encountered throughout my first year. Whether it’s contacting classmates or approaching instructors, reaching out for help is essential.

### The Value of Supportive Personnel
Speaking of personnel, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and understand the challenges we encounter. They keep channels of communication open and are always willing to address our questions.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative was one of the brave steps I took in the early days, and it proved to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which became invaluable.

There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly improve your university experience. My main insight here is to make the most of the support accessible to you—you can never have an excess of assistance!

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that much of the anxiety I felt before and during university was often unfounded. With the variety of support options available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never entirely alone.

Furthermore, I learned how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun. This year has been a path of personal development, and I am thankful for the challenges and opportunities that have molded me throughout.

If you’re about to begin your own university path, remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. Take those leaps, embrace the support around you, and don’t forget to savor the journey.
