**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been timid and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar was far from comforting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a transformative experience filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forging friendships. Beginning university can be overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern of yours as well. On my first day in student housing, just before the term commenced, I spent an entire day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. My experience at Imperial has granted me a second family, initiated by brief chats with individuals who felt just as apprehensive as I did.

Here’s what I discovered: take that risk at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with fellow students. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse community at university, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university studies was considerable, and the shift from the first semester to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become daunted or to question your capabilities when you observe others studying and ponder whether you are keeping pace.

What aided me the most was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp a concept, others likely are as well. The crucial factor is to seek assistance. This, I believe, is the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year. Look for support from your peers and don’t hesitate to approach the faculty—they’re there to assist you!

### The Significance of Support

Speaking of faculty, I can’t stress enough how amazing the Materials department team is. They genuinely want students to succeed and are fully aware of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept lines of communication open with us and provided support whenever we required it.

While I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. One of the proactive steps I took was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal positions or casual encounters, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors can significantly enhance your experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unmerited. With the abundant support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to manage stress from examinations and deadlines while also embracing moments of joy and enjoyment.

If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. Also recognize that there’s a community ready to support you, along with countless chances to grow, learn, and excel.
