### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and doubt about the road ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, leaping into the vibrant university lifestyle was quite daunting. Now, as I look back on the previous academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, trials, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

#### Confronting the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re a potential student engaging with this, you might be feeling similarly. On my inaugural day in student housing, mere days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—companions who feel like family.

What led to this transformation? It all began with simplicity, like initiating light conversation with others who were just as inexperienced and insecure as I was. I discovered that taking an early leap of faith is essential. If you’re not quite prepared at the outset, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others will arise. Most crucially, I found that displaying your true self is the optimal strategy. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

#### Addressing the Academic Demands

Adapting to the academic expectations of university represented another major challenge. The transition from A-level studies to university-level challenges was noticeable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when others appear to have everything under control.

What aided me was the understanding that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, others likely are as well. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to reach out for help may well be the most beneficial skill you can cultivate in your initial year.

#### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for their students to succeed and recognize the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and expressed understanding towards our challenges.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had started sooner. Initially, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with faculty members. This proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal conversations, getting acquainted with the staff is among the best things you can do for yourself. My greatest lesson? Utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much help!

#### Insights Gained

Upon reflection, this year has shown me that much of the anxiousness I experienced—both prior to and throughout university—was often baseless. With the robust support from faculty and fellow students, those apprehensions became manageable. I’ve realized that I’m never completely on my own and that achieving a balance between enjoyment and the demands of exams and deadlines is possible.

University is a transformative journey, and though it may seem intimidating at first, it simultaneously offers a remarkable chance to learn, connect, and flourish.
