**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety as I began my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. The thought of immersing myself in university life was intimidating for someone like me, who had always been more introverted. Now, reflecting on a year packed with growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can recognize the significant transformations this experience has brought. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the task of forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I’m proud to say that I’ve formed some incredible friendships.

These bonds didn’t develop overnight; instead, they began with small steps—like engaging in light conversation with others who were just as new and uncertain as I was. Gradually, these interactions blossomed into a second family at Imperial. The most significant lesson I discovered? Take that initial leap of faith. Even if you’re not feeling completely ready, numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings will be available to help you connect with others. Above all, remain authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the material was another major obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was a clear escalation, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you see others immersed in their studies and wonder if you’re lagging behind.

What aided me during these times was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are facing the same challenge. The essential approach is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. This, I believe, is one of the most crucial abilities to cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Assistance

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and support staff genuinely care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. They are compassionate and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Early on, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster connections with faculty. This turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. Whether through formal engagements or informal conversations, getting to know the staff is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—you can never have excess assistance.

### Insights Gained

In hindsight, this year has enlightened me to the fact that the apprehension I felt before embarking on my university journey—and even during the year—was often unwarranted. With the abundance of guidance available from both faculty and peers, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I uncovered how to navigate the demands of exams and deadlines while also carving out moments of joy and enjoyment.

As I advance, I am thankful for the challenges and development I’ve undergone. Starting university may feel like a leap into uncertainty, but it’s a venture well worth pursuing.
