Upon relocating to London as an international student, the first awareness is how quickly costs pile up, from housing and food to transportation and tuition fees. The next revelation is the unique professional environment, where work, communication, and creativity are viewed differently than in one’s home country.
For me, part-time jobs served as a link between these realms, aiding in financial management and grasping the UK market, particularly in marketing and customer service. My initial and favorite position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing team. The experience of being compensated to generate content for a prestigious university felt surreal and positively influenced my year.
**Becoming a MORA Content Creator**
Assisting the team and generating content for over 700,000 individuals on Imperial’s social media platforms was a fantasy. This role encompassed storytelling and sharing the student experience, gaining knowledge of institutional communication, and appreciating the tone and authenticity that resonates with varied audiences.
This position provided opportunities I never envisioned, such as interviewing notable figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These encounters would not have occurred without embracing that initial chance. The MORA team is welcoming, supportive, and offers a creative environment to explore. **Finding part-time opportunities**
Numerous avenues exist for discovering part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I secured mine via Imperial’s internal job portals on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV for the position you’re pursuing and display enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CV development, mock interviews, and job hunting. Most part-time employers prioritize reliability, initiative, and amiability, rather than just experience.
**Balancing work and study**
Maintaining a balance between work and classes necessitates strategizing. I accepted shifts only when my class schedule allowed for it. Your degree remains the priority, but a suitable part-time job can enhance your educational experience. My marketing coursework became more significant when I could apply it to real-world tasks.
**Exploring different part-time jobs**
Throughout my Master’s, I experimented with a variety of jobs including waiter, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted unique insights. Work in hospitality imparted genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and the ability to maintain composure under pressure. These abilities have remained with me well beyond the café environment.
**Financial independence and visa rules**
From a financial standpoint, part-time positions were essential. I managed to cover my rent, travel, and living expenses, along with saving a little. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours weekly during term time and full-time during holidays, enabling a balance of income and rest.

**Final thoughts**
Looking back on my part-time experience at Imperial, it was more than just earning an income. It instilled confidence, taught professionalism in a different culture, and connected me with a varied group of individuals.
