Upon arriving in London as an international student, the immediate observation is the swift accumulation of expenses, ranging from rent and groceries to transportation and tuition fees. The subsequent realization is the unique professional culture, where work, communication, and creativity are perceived in a manner different from one’s home country.
For me, part-time employment bridged these two realms. They assisted in managing financial obligations while gaining insights into the UK market, particularly from a marketing and customer experience standpoint. My inaugural and favorite position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing team. Getting paid to generate content for a prestigious university was surreal and had a profoundly positive impact on my year.
**Becoming a MORA Content Creator**
Contributing to the team and producing content for over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms was a dream. This role entailed storytelling and sharing student experiences, learning about institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that resonate with varied audiences.
This position opened up unexpected avenues, such as interviewing high-profile individuals like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. Such experiences would not have been possible without accepting that initial opportunity. The MORA team is welcoming, supportive, and encourages creative experimentation. Numerous avenues exist for discovering part-time work at Imperial. I located mine through Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs held during Welcome Week. The essential factor is customizing your CV for the role and demonstrating enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CV crafting, mock interviews, and job searches. Keep in mind that employers value reliability, proactiveness, and friendliness alongside experience.
**Balancing work and study**
Managing work and study necessitates careful planning. I arranged my shifts during periods when my class schedule was less demanding. Your degree should remain top priority, but a strategically chosen part-time position can enhance your academic experience. My marketing coursework became more significant when I applied it to real-world roles.
**Exploring different part-time jobs**
Throughout my Master’s program, I experimented with various positions including waiter, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each role imparted unique lessons. Working in hospitality taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and the ability to remain composed under pressure. These skills have proven invaluable beyond the café setting.
**Financial independence and visa rules**
From a financial standpoint, part-time jobs were essential. I managed to cover my rent, commuting, and living costs, and even managed to save some money. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during the holidays, allowing me to balance income with relaxation.
