Arriving in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared expansive, bustling, and fast-moving. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt directionless. If you’re about to embark on this journey, have no fear. Here’s how to adjust to London before your time at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new life in the city.
Whether you’re coming in early or just before the semester starts, here’s the guidance I wished I had received.
Secure your accommodation
Steer clear of pricey hotels by booking your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is. Opt for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Take care of the necessities
After arriving in London, focus on these important tasks:
- Money transfers – as an international student, discover a budget-friendly option to send money from home. Services such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one promptly to get data and navigation in your new setting.
- Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and suited for students. Establish an account for regular transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus resources, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it without delay.
The initial week at Imperial is important
Your first week is essential for your student experience. It’s when you’ll connect with classmates and forge friendships. Participate in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies that captivate you.
Even if you’re somewhat reserved, encourage yourself to get involved. I formed strong bonds during campus tours and society events. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.
Be smart with travel in London
At first, I struggled with understanding the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers just to explore. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for lower travel costs.
Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city’s obscure treasures.
Identify your comfort zones
London can be quite intense, so pinpoint a comfort area. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for films. Identify spots where you can unwind and rejuvenate.
Discover the city
Acquaint yourself with your new locale. Find supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining spots.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit museums, and take spontaneous city walks. Some of your most treasured moments will arise from wandering a bit astray!

- Utilize a reusable bag to evade fees for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof coat – umbrellas are ineffective against wind.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal initially.
