Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and energetic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about my starting point. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to kickstart your new life in London before your classes at Imperial begin, allowing you to savor the experience of being a newcomer in the city.
No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or just ahead of the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had upon my arrival.
Secure your accommodation
Lock in your housing early to steer clear of pricey hotel fees. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best choices vanish quickly, so try to find a place near campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning lectures.
Administrative tasks: handling necessities
Here are some items to tackle soon after you land in London:
- Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide improved exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one promptly to avoid being without data, vital for getting around in a new environment.
- Bank account – some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick and student-friendly services. Open an account for daily expenses and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this is crucial for entering campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.
Your initial week at Imperial matters
Your first week at Imperial holds significance for your overall student experience. It’s when you connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to join in. I met several of my closest friends during campus tours and society fairs. Your initial week lays the foundation for your university adventure.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Secure your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travels on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your safe spaces
Initially, London can be quite daunting. Having a go-to spot is beneficial – for me, it’s the park close to my home. I stop by daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I relax with a film.
Find your own comfort zones, be it a café, bookstore, or bench by the river. These areas help you recharge and regain your focus.
Discover the city
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods you frequent around campus and home. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations.
Check out iconic sites, visit free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus for scenic views. Some of your most cherished memories will come from wandering a bit off the beaten path.
Final pointers before immersing into Imperial’s student life
- Carry a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use options.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective in strong winds.
- Participate in unique events – they lead to fantastic stories.
- Don’t be alarmed if you feel lost – it’s a common feeling at the beginning.
