Upon my initial arrival in London, the city struck me as vast, noisy, rapid, and slightly intimidating. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament soon, there’s no need for concern. Here is some guidance to assist you in adapting to your new life in London prior to embarking on your journey at Imperial, ensuring you can fully appreciate the novelty of the city.
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term begins, here’s the insight I wish I had received at my arrival.
Secure your accommodation
Prevent expensive hotel fees by organizing your living arrangements ahead of time. I was lucky, yet not everyone shares this fortune, as the top choices are swiftly booked. Aim for a spot close to campus or near a dependable Tube line, as long travels can be daunting for early classes.
Essential life tasks: what to organize
Once you arrive in London, tackle these crucial tasks promptly:
- Money transfers – as an overseas student, find a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Applications like Wise or Revolut can aid in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – ensure you have mobile data for navigation by obtaining a UK SIM card and data plan promptly upon arrival.
- Bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for daily expenses and part-time income deposits.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it at your earliest convenience.
The significance of your initial week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for your student experience. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Engage in Welcome Week to uncover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and participate in activities that pique your interests.
Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I encountered some of my closest friends during campus tours and society tables. Your initial week establishes the ambiance for your university adventure.
Getting around London: travel efficiently
During my inaugural week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London for exploration. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my blunder by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more economical travel.
Walking remains a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover your comfort zones
London can feel emotionally taxing, especially at first. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – for me, it’s the park adjacent to my home. I visit it daily to unwind. My second comfort place is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a weekly movie.
Discover your own havens, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.
Venture out in the city!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll often visit around campus and your home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your best memories will emerge from getting slightly lost!
Final pointers before commencing your Imperial student life
- Carry a reusable bag – stores typically charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective in gusty weather.
- Participate in unique events – they can lead to memorable stories.
- Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences this initially.
