When I first arrived in London, the city seemed vast, noisy, rapid, and somewhat intimidating. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t worry. Here’s how to get your new life in London organized before your classes begin at Imperial so you can relish being new in the city.
Regardless of whether you come weeks in advance or just right before the semester starts, here’s the guidance I wish had been shared with me upon my arrival.
Secure accommodation first
Steer clear of expensive hotel bills by sorting out your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as prime options disappear quickly. Target a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy journeys for morning lectures.
Administrative tasks: organizing necessities
As soon as you land in London, tackle these necessities promptly:
- Money transfers – International students require a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut assist in sidestepping unfavorable exchange rates.
- Acquiring a UK SIM card – Having data is essential for navigating a new place or nation. Get a UK SIM card and a data plan soon after your arrival.
- Opening a bank account – Some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. Set up an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Collecting your student ID card – This allows access to campus buildings, the library, and student discounts. Make sure to get your ID card as soon as possible.
Your first week at Imperial is essential
The initial week at Imperial is crucial for your student journey. It’s a time to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you feel shy, push yourself to get involved. I did, and I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society stalls. Your first week shapes your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was hectic but unforgettable. Avoid my blunder by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses affordably.
Walking remains the best way to soak in the city and its culture. London has many hidden treasures you’ll find while exploring.
Discover your comfort zones
London can feel overwhelming, especially at first. A comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a neighboring park where I go daily to unwind. My other spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I relax weekly with a movie.
Identify your own comfort areas, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to decompress and reset.
Don’t forget to explore!
Familiarize yourself with your frequently visited places around campus and your residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.
Visit iconic landmarks, check out free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the view, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your best memories will stem from getting a bit lost!
Final advice before diving into Imperial student life
- Get a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t cut it in windy conditions.
- Embrace unusual events – they lead to fantastic stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone goes through that initially.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
