If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to be anxious. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, enabling you to relish the adventure of being a newcomer in this metropolis.
Whether you’re arriving a few weeks early or just ahead of the semester kickoff, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon my initial arrival.
First things first: secure a living space
To steer clear of costly hotel fees, organize your housing in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as prime options deplete quickly. Aim to locate accommodation near your campus or close to a dependable Tube line, as lengthy commutes can be tough for early morning classes.
Administrative tasks: taking care of the essentials
Upon your arrival in London, there are a few tasks you should prioritize immediately:
- Money transfers – if you’re an international student, seek out a trustworthy and cost-effective method for transferring funds from your home nation. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
- Obtaining a UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigating a new environment. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after you land.
- Establishing a bank account – some banks have a requirement for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. You’ll need a bank account for everyday transactions and any part-time employment.
- Collecting your student ID card – this card provides access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Make sure to pick it up as soon as you can.
Your initial week at Imperial is essential
Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student life. It’s when you’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and sign up for activities that pique your interest.
Even if you tend to be reserved, attempt to engage. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the mood for your university experience.
Exploring London: travel wisely
During my inaugural week, I struggled to comprehend the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable, yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses more economically.
Walking remains a fantastic way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your comfort zones
London can initially feel emotionally intense. Having a comforting place is beneficial – for me, it’s the park close to my home. I go there daily to unwind. My second comfort location is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly.
Discover your own relaxing spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and find calm.
And don’t forget to venture out!
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate your nearby supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eating or coffee spots.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and roam without a specific plan. Some of your finest memories will stem from getting a bit lost!
