If you’re facing a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new urban lifestyle.
Whether you’re arriving early or just ahead of the term, here’s the wisdom I wish I’d had when I got here.

Arrange your housing in advance to steer clear of pricey hotel stays. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Try to find a place near your campus or a reliable Tube line, as lengthy commutes aren’t ideal for morning classes.

- Money Transfers: As an international student, seek an efficient and cost-effective method for transferring funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card: Quickly obtain a UK SIM card and data plan to prevent getting lost without access to maps.
- Bank Account: Some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and accommodating for students. Get an account ready for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID Card: This is vital for entering campus buildings, libraries, and enjoying student discounts. Make sure to collect it promptly.
Your First Week at Imperial: Its Significance
The first week at Imperial is critical. It’s an opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re a bit introverted, do your best to get involved. I made some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week sets the foundation for your university journey.
Smart Travel in London
At first, I found the Tube and buses confusing, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an adventure, albeit chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel cost-effectively. Walking remains a fantastic way to see the sights and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can feel overwhelming initially. Having a cozy place makes a difference. For me, it’s the park near my home and the O2 for my weekly movie nights. Find your own comfort zones, whether it’s a café, a bookstore, or a bench by the river, to unwind and recharge.
Discover the City
Become familiar with your new environment. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries. Explore iconic sights, visit free museums, and enjoy a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your best moments will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path.
