Upon my initial arrival in London, I perceived the city as immense and daunting. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about how to commence my journey. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, fret not. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban lifestyle.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just ahead of the term, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.
First and foremost: secure your accommodation
Steer clear of costly hotel expenses by arranging your lodging in advance. I was fortunate, but that’s not always the case, as the top choices disappear swiftly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Administrative tasks: managing the necessary essentials
Once you’re in London, tackle these essentials without delay:
- Money transfers – International students require a trustworthy, cost-effective way to receive funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Vital for data and navigation in an unfamiliar city. Acquire one shortly after your arrival.
- Bank account – Some banks necessitate a UK address, yet digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Establish an account for transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is essential for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
Your initial week at Imperial is the most significant
Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for your student experience. It’s when you’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friendships. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re timid, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I encountered some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. Your initial week sets the precedent for your university experience.
Getting around London: smart travel
During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was a memorable yet hectic experience. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel via Tube and buses economically.
Walking remains a fantastic method to appreciate the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover your comfort zones
London can feel overwhelming, especially at first. Identify a comfort zone, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. For me, it’s a nearby park and the O2 for films.
And don’t forget to explore!
Get acquainted with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining spots. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy spontaneous strolls. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting slightly lost!
Final advice before diving into Imperial student life
- Obtain a reusable bag – Shops typically charge for single-use ones.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas are ineffective against strong winds.
- Participate in unique events – They offer great stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – It’s completely normal initially.
No need to have everything figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already better off than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
