Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar boat, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace your new urban life.
No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term kicks off, this is the advice I wish had been shared with me upon my arrival.
Secure Your Accommodation First
Prevent pricey hotel fees by sorting out your accommodation ahead of time. I got lucky, but not everyone will, as the best places fill up fast. Aim for housing close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes to those early classes.
Critical Life Administration
When you reach London, promptly tackle these crucial tasks:
- Currency transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy and cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one right away for internet access, vital for navigating a new city.
- Bank account – consider digital banks such as Monzo or Starling, which are fast and accommodating for students. Open an account for your everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this is essential for entering campus facilities, libraries, and accessing student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.
Your First Week at Imperial is Key
Your initial week at Imperial is significant. It’s the time to meet roommates, students in your classes, and potential friends. Join Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and organizations. Even if shyness holds you back, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and it led to enduring friendships. This week shapes your university journey.
Travel Smart in London
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading to me walking nine kilometers across the city. Avoid this by getting a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to save on travel. Nevertheless, walking is still a fantastic way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Locations
London can be emotionally intense. Having a go-to spot can help – mine is a park nearby where I go to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another location I frequent weekly to relax. Discover your own places, like a café or bookstore, to recharge and regroup.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the areas you visit regularly around campus and your residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred food joints. Check out iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering without a set plan.

- Bring a reusable bag – shops impose fees for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well in the wind.
