Stepping into London at first seemed daunting due to its enormity, hustle, and rhythm. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about what to do next. If you’re about to face this situation, there’s no need to worry. Here’s how to acclimate to London prior to starting at Imperial, so that you can thoroughly enjoy your new urban life.
Whether you’re arriving well in advance or just ahead of the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.
Top Priority: Book Accommodation
Prevent expensive hotel expenses by securing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has that experience, as the best options get booked quickly. Strive for a location close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize long journeys to morning lectures.
Crucial Life Administration Tasks
After reaching London, immediately tackle these important tasks:
- Money Transfers – As an overseas student, discover an economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide appealing rates.
- UK SIM Card – Connectivity is vital for navigating a new city. Get a UK SIM card and data package shortly after your arrival.
- Bank Account Establishment – Some banks might require a UK address, however, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Open an account for everyday financial transactions and part-time job earnings.
- Student ID Card – This card provides access to campus resources, libraries, and discounts for students. Acquire it as soon as you can.
Significance of the First Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital for shaping your student experience. It’s an opportunity to connect with housemates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and register for those that pique your interest.
Even if you feel shy, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I formed close friendships during campus tours and society events. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.
Clever Travel in London
At first, I found the Tube and buses confusing and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. While it was memorable, it’s not the best approach. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably by Tube and bus.
Walking remains the optimal way to absorb the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures along the way.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can be emotionally intense, particularly at the beginning. Discovering a comfort zone is essential. For me, it’s the nearby park where I relax every day. Another is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly.
Pinpoint your own soothing spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside seat, to unwind and recharge.
Venture and Uncover!
Get acquainted with common areas near campus and your residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations.
Explore renowned landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy a ride on a double-decker bus for the scenery. Spontaneous strolls can create some of your most cherished memories!
Final Suggestions Before Diving into Imperial Student Life
- Carry a reusable bag – stores often impose charges for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof coat – umbrellas are ineffective against rain driven by wind.
- Participate in unusual events – they lead to great stories.
- Don’t fret if you feel a bit lost – it’s a common feeling initially.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out on your first day. By reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
