If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to kickstart your new life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to savor the city.

Steer clear of pricey hotel fees by securing living arrangements early. I was lucky, but not everyone experiences that, as the prime spots are taken quickly. Target a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy travels for morning classes.

When you arrive in London, focus on the following:
- Money transfers – As an international student, discover a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Obtain one at once for data access and navigation in a new environment.
- Bank account – Certain banks necessitate a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday finances and part-time jobs.
- Student ID card – This allows entry to campus facilities, libraries, and discounts for students. Collect it at your earliest convenience.
Your First Week at Imperial: Its Significance
The inaugural week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time for meeting roommate, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join events. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society fairs. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.
Smart Travel in London
During my initial week, I ended up walking nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable experience but also chaotic. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the discount for those aged 18 and above for more affordable travel. Walking remains an excellent way to discover the city and unveil hidden treasures.

London can feel emotionally intense initially. Discover a comforting location, such as a park, café, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can unwind and recharge. For me, it’s the park near my home and the O2 for movie nights.

Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy spontaneous strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from wandering a bit off the beaten path.
