Stepping into London for the very first time was quite a lot to handle. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance to help you adjust to London before kicking off your journey at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new urban experience.
Whether you’re arriving ahead of time or just before the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
Secure accommodation
Steer clear of pricey hotel bookings by organizing your lodging early. I was lucky, but not everyone will be. The prime locations get snatched up quickly, so aim for a spot close to your campus or a trustworthy Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes.
Key life administration
Once you’re in London, focus on these essential tasks:
- Money transfers – as an overseas student, find a trustworthy, cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you dodge unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one right away for data and navigation in your new city.
- Bank account – some banks insist on a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer fast service and are student-friendly. You’ll need an account for daily expenditures and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – vital for entering campus facilities, libraries, and enjoying student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
The significance of your first week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal. It’s the time you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to join in. I connected with some of my closest friends during campus explorations and society side events. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Navigate London wisely
At first, I struggled to grasp the Tube or buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. It was memorable yet hectic. Secure your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cheaper travel. Strolling is still a fantastic way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.
Discover your comfort zones
London can feel quite daunting, especially at the beginning. Finding a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a local park where I go to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another favorite spot where I catch movies weekly. Identify your own places, whether a coffee shop, bookstore, or riverside seat, to recharge and reset.
Discover the city
Familiarize yourself with your new environment around campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots. Tour famous sites, explore complimentary museums, and relish the sights from a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from wandering a bit off course!
Final pointers for starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective in gusty conditions.
- Join unique events – they provide excellent stories.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – this is common at the start.
You don’t need to have everything figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
