Arriving in London was initially a bit daunting, given its enormity and rapid pace. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt adrift. If you’re about to go through this, do not fret. Here’s a guide on how to adapt to London life before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to enjoy the city to the fullest.
Whether you’re coming in early or just ahead of the term, here’s the information I wish I had received.
Secure a residence
Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging housing in advance. I was lucky, but good choices vanish quickly. Target a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.
Key administrative tasks
Upon your arrival, focus on these activities:
- Money transfers – Utilize apps like Wise or Revolut for cost-effective international transfers.
- UK SIM card – Crucial for navigating and staying in touch.
- Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer swift and student-friendly services.
- Student ID card – Grants access to campus facilities and student discounts.
Your inaugural week at Imperial
Your first week is vital for meeting new people and discovering over 350 student clubs and societies. Participate in Welcome Week activities to establish a positive vibe for your university journey.
Getting around London
Initially, I trekked nine kilometers across London. Instead, obtain a Student Oyster card for discounted travel. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures.
Identify comforting spots
London can feel overwhelming. Locate a place for unwinding, like a park or café, to aid in resetting your mind.
Discover the city
Get to know local supermarkets, pharmacies, and restaurants. Explore landmarks, museums, and embrace unexpected adventures.
