Arriving in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city felt huge, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I wasn’t sure how to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimatize to London before you embark on your journey at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new life in the city.
Whether you get here weeks in advance or just moments before the term begins, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.
Secure your accommodation
Steer clear of expensive hotel rates by organizing your lodging well in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The top choices disappear quickly, so aim to secure a residence close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.
Life admin: getting the basics sorted
Once you’re in London, make sure to tackle these necessities without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, identify a trustworthy and cost-effective means to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut can assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – without data, navigating a new surroundings can be challenging. Acquire a UK SIM card with data soon after you arrive.
- Bank account – some banks may require a UK address, but digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are quick and geared towards students. Set up an account for everyday spending and part-time job income.
- Student ID card – this provides you access to campus locations, the library, and student discounts. Make sure to pick it up as soon as you can.
Your initial week at Imperial is significant
Your first week at Imperial is crucial for your experience as a student. It’s the time when you meet your flatmates, classmates, and future pals. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to join in. I made that effort and ended up meeting some of my closest companions during campus tours and society booths. Your first week really sets the stage for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel smart
<pDuring my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers throughout London. It was a memorable yet hectic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to use the Tube and buses at a lower cost.
Walking remains a fantastic way to soak in the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures.
Discover your comfort zones
London can be emotionally intense, particularly in the beginning. Having a comforting place is beneficial – for me, it’s the park near my home. I visit every day to recharge. My second favorite location is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy watching movies weekly to relax.
Identify your personal comfort areas, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river. Such spaces are essential for your relaxation and rejuvenation.
Get out and explore!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and home. Locate local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and preferred spots for meals or coffee.
Visit iconic sites, explore free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and roam without a specific destination. Some of your most memorable moments will stem from a little bit of wandering!
Final pointers before diving into student life at Imperial
- Obtain a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for disposable ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often fail in windy weather.
- Participate in unique events – they can lead to great stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a normal feeling initially.
