Stepping into London was a lot to take in; the city seemed vast, noisy, and swift. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to begin. If you’re feeling the same way, don’t fret. Here’s how to set your life in London on the right track before you start at Imperial, ensuring you can savor your fresh start in the city.
Whether you’re arriving early or just in time for the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
Secure your housing
Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging accommodation in advance. I was fortunate, but that’s not the case for everyone. Look for housing close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.
Key administrative tasks
Take care of these vital tasks as soon as you land:
- Money transfers – utilize applications like Wise or Revolut for budget-friendly international transfers.
- UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data and navigation.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and suited for students.
- Student ID card – vital for entry to campus and receiving discounts.
Your initial week at Imperial
Your first week is significant. Introduce yourself to flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week and check out clubs and societies. Challenge yourself to get involved; I formed tight bonds during spontaneous campus tours and society stalls.
Navigate efficiently in London
Avoid walking everywhere as I did. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking is still lovely for uncovering hidden treasures.

London can feel intense. Locate a comforting place like a park, café, or bookstore to unwind and recharge.
Discover the city
Acquaint yourself with your local area, including grocery stores, pharmacies, and favorite dining spots. Explore landmarks, museums, and enjoy getting a little lost for unforgettable adventures.
