- Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and affordable means to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – make sure you have data for navigation by acquiring a UK SIM card right away.
- Bank account establishment – while some banks require a UK address, online banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and favorable for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this is essential for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as soon as possible.

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your overall student experience. It’s the moment to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that captivate you.
Even if you tend to be shy, encourage yourself to join in. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society events. The first week sets the foundation for your university adventure.
Intelligent travel in London
During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable Tube and bus travel.
Walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, unveiling hidden treasures.
Identify your comfort zones
London can feel emotionally intense at first. A comfort zone helps – mine is a nearby park for daily unwinding. The O2, just a 10-minute distance, is my weekly cinema getaway.
