Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city felt enormous, noisy, and fast-moving. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I seemed to wander aimlessly. If you’re about to encounter this, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before beginning at Imperial, so you can relish your new urban lifestyle.
Whether you’re getting in early or just ahead of term, here’s the guidance I wished I had received.

Save on costly hotel rates by securing accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not always the case. Search for a place close to campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for morning classes.

Once you arrive in London, there are some important things to take care of:
- Money transfers – International students require budget-friendly ways to send money. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Obtain one swiftly for data and navigation in a new area.
- Bank account – Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and student-oriented. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – Vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to pick it up quickly.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week is vital for shaping your student experience. Connect with flatmates, peers, and potential buddies. Participate in Welcome Week events and check out over 350 student-led clubs and organizations.
Even if you’re reserved, strive to get involved. I made close friends through campus tours and club activities. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university path.
Travel Wisely in London
At first, I was baffled by the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers to explore. Avoid my blunder. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs.
Walking is still a fantastic way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Locations
London can be a lot to handle. Locate a comfortable space, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My go-to spots are a nearby park and the O2 for films.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with your campus and residential areas. Locate local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries.
Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy spontaneous walks around the city. Some of your best experiences will arise from wandering aimlessly!
Last Tips for Beginning at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use alternatives.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t very effective in windy conditions.
- Join unique events for unforgettable stories.
- Don’t be alarmed if you feel disoriented; it’s completely normal at first.
