Arriving in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and full of energy. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost about where to start. If you’re about to undergo this experience, fret not. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before your journey at Imperial commences, so you can relish your new urban lifestyle.
Whether you’re arriving ahead of time or just before the term kicks off, here’s what I wish I had been aware of when I first got here.
Locate a place to stay
Arrange your accommodation early to steer clear of pricey hotel expenses. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Seek a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to facilitate those early morning lectures.
Essentials of life management
Once you arrive in London, tackle these necessities:
- Money transfers – International students require a reliable method to send money. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Acquire one promptly to have access to data and navigational assistance in your new surroundings.
- Bank account – Certain banks necessitate a UK address; however, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday expenses and payments for part-time work.
- Student ID card – This is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as possible.
Significance of your inaugural week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is pivotal. It’s the time for meeting flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re on the quieter side, encourage yourself to get involved. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus excursions and society activities. Your first week will shape your university journey.
Smart traveling in London
During my initial week, I struggled with understanding the Tube and buses and ended up covering nine kilometers on foot across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel inexpensively. Walking remains a fantastic way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover your comfort zones
London can be daunting. Identifying a cozy spot is beneficial – mine is a local park where I go to unwind. The O2, just a ten-minute journey from my place, is another place I go to relax with a film. Seek out your own havens, whether a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to recharge and refresh.
Discover the city
Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries. Tour well-known landmarks, check out museums, and take in what the city has to offer. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from spontaneous outings.
Final insights for starting your journey at Imperial
- Bring a reusable bag – Many stores impose charges for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas aren’t very effective in strong winds.
- Participate in unique events – They make for great anecdotes.
- Don’t be alarmed if you feel a bit lost – It’s common initially.
