Stepping into London for the first time was quite intimidating due to its enormity and rapid tempo. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to your new life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, enabling you to savor the city.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks ahead or at the last minute before the semester kicks off, here’s the guidance I wished I had when I first arrived.
Secure Housing
Prevent high hotel costs by booking your accommodation well in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Lock in a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Essential Life Admin
Take care of these essentials soon after your arrival in London:
- Money transfers – as an international student, discover a dependable and cost-effective method to transfer funds. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide great exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – crucial for data and navigation. Obtain one without delay after your arrival.
- Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and income from part-time work.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and discounts for students. Obtain it as quickly as you can.
Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week is pivotal for shaping your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and organizations. Even if you’re shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week is crucial in setting the tone for your university life.
Getting Around London: Travel Wisely
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, walking nine kilometers all over London. Avoid this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares. Walking remains a fantastic way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover Your Favorite Places
London can feel overwhelming. Having a go-to refuge is beneficial. Mine is a local park I visit every day to unwind. The O2, located just 10 minutes away, is another place where I relax weekly while catching a movie. Find your own comfort zones like cafes, bookstores, or riverside resting spots to chill and recharge.
Go on Adventures!
Get acquainted with neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred dining or coffee venues. Tour iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus for the experience. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from aimless exploration.
Final Thoughts Before Joining Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – shops impose charges for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are useless against the wind.
- Join unusual events – they make for great stories later.
- Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal at the beginning.
