Upon arriving in London for the very first time, the city appeared vast. Everything was noisy, rapid, and somewhat daunting. With merely a suitcase in one hand and Google Maps in the opposite, I was uncertain where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament soon, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, ensuring you truly relish the experience of being a newcomer in the city.
Whether you’re landing a few weeks ahead or just right before the term begins, here’s the counsel I wish someone had shared with me upon my initial arrival.
First things first: secure accommodation
Steer clear of pricey hotels by organizing your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the top choices vanish rapidly! Try to locate a place near your campus or at least within the reach of a dependable Tube line – those early lectures can be challenging if you live more than an hour away.
Administrative matters: addressing the essential tasks
There are several items you should ideally take care of as soon as you arrive in London:
- Financial management – if you’re an international student like myself, you’ll need a trustworthy and affordable means to transfer funds from your home nation. Apps such as Wise or Revolut shielded me from awful exchange rates.
- Obtaining a UK SIM card – lacking data translates to no navigation, which is far from ideal in an unfamiliar area or country! Acquire a UK SIM card and data immediately upon landing.
- Establishing a bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Set up your bank account quickly for day-to-day transactions and to receive salaries for any part-time jobs.
- Collecting your student ID card – this provides access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts at eateries and shops. Retrieve your student ID card at your earliest convenience.
The initial week at Imperial is crucial
Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. This is when you’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and sign up for activities that intrigue you.
Even if you’re introverted, strive to encourage yourself to join in. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during spontaneous campus explorations and at various society booths. Your first week at Imperial establishes the foundation for your university adventure.
Navigating London: travel wisely
During my first week, I struggled to understand the Tube or buses, so I walked nine kilometers across London for exploration. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – but don’t follow my example. Obtain your Student Oyster card as soon as possible and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses for less.
That said, walking remains the best approach to experience the city and its culture. London is filled with hidden treasures you’ll uncover by meandering.
Identify your comfort zones
London can feel emotionally taxing, particularly at the onset. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – for me, it’s the park adjacent to my residence. I visit daily to decompress and rejuvenate. My second comfort zone is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I watch films weekly to relax.
Discover your own locations that provide solace in the bustling city, whether it’s a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench. Having a place to unwind and reset is more beneficial than you might realize.
And don’t forget to discover!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent near campus and home. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred spots for food or coffee.
The renowned landmarks are also worthwhile to visit. Dedicate your weekends to exploring your new city. Visit free museums. Ride a red double-decker bus for the view. Wander aimlessly. Some of your best experiences will stem from getting a bit lost!
