Stepping into London for the first time was quite an experience. The city felt immense, noisy, and incredibly fast. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, there’s no need to panic. Here’s a guide to kickstarting your new journey in London prior to starting at Imperial, ensuring you can savor the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

First things first: secure accommodation

Book your housing ahead of time to steer clear of costly hotel stays. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune. The prime spots disappear quickly! Target a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Essential tasks: taking care of the basics

As soon as you reach London, tackle these basic needs right away:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, find a dependable and economical means to send money. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – acquire one promptly for data and navigation in your new environment.
  • Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Set up an account for daily transactions and earnings from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus, utilizing library resources, and obtaining student discounts. Retrieve it as early as possible.

Your initial week at Imperial is key

That first week at Imperial is vital. You’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I formed some of my closest friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. Your initial week will shape your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

<pDuring my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my error by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for economical travel.

Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Establish your comfort zones

London can feel intense. Having a go-to spot is beneficial – mine is the park close to my residence. I visit daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, where I watch films weekly.

Seek out your own comfort spots, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

And don’t forget to venture out!

Familiarize yourself with your new surroundings near campus and home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride on a double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from getting a bit lost!

Final thoughts before you jump into Imperial life

  • Get a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use ones.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective during windy conditions.
  • Participate in quirky events – they make for memorable stories.
  • If you feel disoriented, don’t fret – it’s completely normal at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the very first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
