Stepping into London was quite a lot to handle. The city appeared vast, noisy, and rapid in its rhythm. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about how to proceed. If this describes your situation soon, don’t panic. Here’s how to kickstart your new life in London before beginning your journey at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new experiences in the city.
Whether you’re arriving ahead of time or just in time for the start of the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
First things first: secure accommodation
Steer clear of pricey hotels by organizing your lodging early. I was fortunate, but not everyone has that luck. The best places fill up quickly! Try to find somewhere close to campus or near a dependable Tube route – early morning lectures can be challenging if you’re more than an hour away.
Administrative basics: organizing necessary tasks
Tackle these essentials at the earliest:
- Money transfers – as an international student, look for a trustworthy and cost-effective way to move money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one promptly to avoid being without data in a new environment.
- Bank account – certain banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Establish an account for daily expenditures and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID – this is vital for accessing campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as you can.
Your initial week at Imperial is key
Your first week at Imperial holds great significance. It’s the time you connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and sign up for those that catch your interest.
Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I pushed myself and formed close bonds during campus tours and at society stalls. Your first week establishes the groundwork for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my initial week, I struggled with public transport, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was a memorable experience, but learn from my mistake. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. London has hidden treasures that you’ll find by exploring.
Identify your favorite spots
London can be quite intense, especially at first. Having a comforting location can help – mine is a local park where I visit daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I catch movies weekly.
Discover your own comfort zones, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside seat, for relaxation and rejuvenation.
And remember to wander!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent near campus and home. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the scenic views, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting a little lost!
Final suggestions before you jump into Imperial student life
- Get a reusable bag – shops typically charge for single-use bags.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective in the wind.
- Embrace unusual activities – they often lead to great stories.
- Don’t worry if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling initially.
You don’t need to have everything sorted by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better place than I was when I started at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure, one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
