Stepping into London was a lot to take in; the city seemed enormous, noisy, and fast-paced. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about where to begin. If you’re feeling the same way, have no fear. Here’s a guide on settling into London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish the city.
Whether you’re arriving early or just prior to the term, here’s the guidance I wish I’d received.
Secure a Residence
Book your accommodation early to steer clear of pricey hotel costs. I got lucky, but good choices disappear quickly. Try to live close to campus or on a reliable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Key Life Administration
Take care of these important tasks shortly after arriving in London:
- Money transfers – as an international student, utilize apps like Wise or Revolut for economical transfers.
- UK SIM card – obtain one promptly for data and navigation.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students.
- Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus, utilizing the library, and securing discounts.
Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week is vital for meeting flatmates, fellow students, and friends. Participate in Welcome Week and check out over 350 student-driven clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved; it sets the foundation for your university experience.
Smart Travel in London
At first, I walked nine kilometers around London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. Don’t make the same error; obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cheaper transportation. Walking is still a wonderful way to uncover hidden treasures.
Discover Your Favorite Spots
London can feel like a lot, so locate comforting places. For me, it’s a nearby park and the O2 for films. Find your own refuge, such as a café or bookstore, to unwind and recharge.
Discover the City
Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your residence. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and eateries. Make sure to visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and take spontaneous strolls. Some of your fondest memories will arise from exploring a little aimlessly.
Final Insights for Life at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to sidestep fees for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t practical in gusty weather.
- Go to unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; this is a normal feeling at the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already more prepared than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and kick off your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
