Arriving in London for the very first time was quite intense. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this, don’t stress. Here are some tips to make your adjustment to London smoother before kicking off your journey at Imperial, so you can relish your new city living.
Regardless of whether you get here weeks early or just before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish someone had shared with me.
First things first: secure your living arrangements
To steer clear of costly hotel fees, arrange your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but many aren’t, as the top choices vanish rapidly. Strive for a location close to campus or near a dependable Tube line to sidestep long commutes for early classes.
Administrative essentials: managing the basics
Upon arriving in London, promptly tackle these critical tasks:
- Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy and budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigation in a new city. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.
- Establish a bank account – some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID – crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.
Your initial week at Imperial is critical
The first week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re somewhat reserved, make an effort to join in. I did and formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week lays the foundation for your university adventure.
Getting around London: travel wisely
In my first week, I struggled to grasp the Tube or bus system, so I trekked nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but quite hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses economically.
Nonetheless, walking remains the best way to soak in the city and its culture. London is filled with hidden treasures you’ll discover while strolling.
Identify your comfort zones
London can be emotionally taxing, particularly at the start. Having a go-to spot is beneficial – mine is a nearby park that I visit daily to unwind. Another spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch films on a weekly basis to relax.
Discover your own comfort havens, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These locations offer a place to de-stress and rejuvenate.
And don’t forget to explore!
Familiarize yourself with your frequently visited areas around campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite food or coffee hangouts.
Go see iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and wander about without a set plan. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from a little detour!
Final thoughts before diving into your Imperial student life
- Acquire a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for disposable ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t practical in windy conditions.
- Embrace unusual events – they can turn into fantastic stories.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – everyone does at the beginning.
You don’t have to have everything understood on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
