Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and fast-moving. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to life in London before your term at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish the excitement of being a newcomer in the city.
Regardless of whether you arrive a few weeks prior or just right before classes begin, here’s the advice I wish I’d received.
Secure Your Housing
Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by organizing your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but it’s not the case for everyone, as the finest options get booked fast. Search for a place that is close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes to morning lectures.
Key Life Administration
Once you’ve arrived in London, promptly take care of these necessities:
- Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data and guidance in your new surroundings.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time employment payments.
- Student ID card – crucial for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.
The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time to meet your flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, make an effort to join in. I did, and I formed friendships that remain close today during campus tours and society gatherings. This first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Smart Travel in London
At first, I was perplexed by the Tube and buses, and I ended up trekking nine kilometers through London. It was a remarkable yet hectic experience. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses. Walking is also an excellent way to explore and uncover the city’s hidden treasures.
Discover Your Comfort Zones
London can be emotionally intensive. Having a comforting place is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I often go to unwind. Another is the O2, just a short 10-minute trip away, where I watch films weekly. Identify your own locations, whether it be a café, bookstore, or a bench by the riverside, to relax and recharge.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with your new environment around campus and your home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee spots. Explore notable landmarks, visit free museums, and take in views from a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from wandering without a specific plan.
Final Suggestions for Beginning at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees associated with single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof coat, as umbrellas often fail against the wind.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel a bit disoriented initially; it’s completely normal.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already doing better than I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
