Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The metropolis felt enormous, noisy, and full of energy. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before commencing your studies at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new life in the city.
No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
Secure Accommodation
Avoid pricey hotels by arranging housing as soon as possible. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Try to find a place close to campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.
Administrative Essentials
Take care of these key items shortly after arriving in London:
- Money transfers: As an international student, seek a trustworthy and economical method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut offer competitive exchange rates.
- UK SIM card: Obtain one right away for data usage and navigation.
- Bank account: Digital options like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. You’ll need an account for everyday expenses and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID card: This allows access to campus buildings, libraries, and various student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.
The Significance of the First Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week at Imperial holds great importance. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led groups and societies. Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to engage. I forged close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society fairs. This week shapes the foundation of your university experience.
Navigate Wisely in London
During my initial week, I trekked nine kilometers across London, unfamiliar with the Tube and bus systems. It was memorable but not practical. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus travel. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.
Identify Your Favorite Spots
London can be emotionally intense. Discover your comfort zone, whether it’s a park, café, bookstore, or a riverside bench. My own comfort zones include a local park and the O2, where I destress weekly. These spaces are ideal for relaxation and resetting.
Get Out and Explore!
Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and go-to spots for food or coffee. Make sure to visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your best experiences will arise from simply wandering around.
Final Recommendations Before Joining Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to dodge fees on single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t very useful when it’s windy.
- Attend unique events for memorable stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s a normal feeling initially.
You don’t have to have everything figured out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
