By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing

Upon my initial arrival in London, the city struck me as vast, noisy, rapid, and a bit daunting. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need for concern. Here’s how to set the stage for your new life in London prior to your journey at Imperial, allowing you to embrace your new surroundings.

No matter if you land weeks in advance or right before the semester kicks off, here’s the guidance I wished I’d been given.

Secure your living arrangements

To avoid expensive hotels, book your accommodation early. I was lucky, but the best places disappear quickly. Try to find a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube connection to minimize long commutes for early classes.

Administrative essentials: what to arrange

As soon as you reach London, deal with these essentials:

  • Money transfers – as an overseas student, discover an affordable method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut often provide improved exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one at once to ensure you have data for navigation in unfamiliar locations.
  • Bank account – some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for everyday expenses and part-time job earnings.
  • Student ID card – this is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and discounts for students. Retrieve it as soon as you can.

The significance of your inaugural week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial plays a pivotal role in shaping your student experience. Connect with housemates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in what excites you.

Even if you tend to be reserved, urge yourself to join in. I made some of my dearest friendships during campus tours and society fairs. Your first week establishes the atmosphere for your academic adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I struggled to comprehend the Tube and buses, leading to a trek of nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to make traveling on the Tube and buses more economical.

Walking remains the finest method to fully experience the city and its culture, unveiling hidden treasures throughout London.

Discover your cozy spots

London can feel quite intense, particularly at first. Having a comforting location helps – for me, it’s the park near my residence. I stop by each day to breathe and recharge. My second favorite place is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I relax weekly with a film.

Identify your own favorite spots, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench, where you can unwind and reset in the bustling city.

Go out and discover!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and home. Find your closest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee venues.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus for the view, and roam without a specific destination. Some of your most cherished memories might come from a little adventure off the beaten path!

Final pointers before immersing into Imperial student life

  • Carry a reusable bag – shops typically charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas may not hold up against the wind.
  • Participate in unique events – they create wonderful stories.
  • Don’t freak out if you feel disoriented – it happens to everyone initially.

You need not have everything sorted on day one. If you’re consuming this information, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London chapter one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
