Stepping foot in London for the first time, the city felt enormous and daunting. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was bewildered. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to kickstart your new life in London before you begin at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new surroundings.
Whether you arrive early or just ahead of term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
Secure Accommodation
Steer clear of expensive hotels by arranging your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Seek accommodation close to campus or near a reliable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Crucial Life Tasks
Once you arrive in London, take care of the following necessities:
- Money transfers – as an international student, discover a dependable method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one swiftly to ensure you have data for navigation in an unfamiliar city.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID card – vital for access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.
Your First Week at Imperial is Key
Your initial week is essential for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you feel introverted, make an effort to get involved. I forged close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Navigating London Efficiently
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was unforgettable but a bit chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.
Walking is still a fantastic way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can be quite overwhelming. Seek a spot of comfort, like a nearby park or a cherished place to relax, such as a café or bookstore. These locations will help you unwind and rejuvenate.
Discover the City
Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred eateries.
Check out iconic landmarks, free museums, and relish the views from a double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering without a set agenda.
Additional Tips for Starting at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag to circumvent fees for single-use options.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t effective against the wind.
- Attend unique events for unforgettable stories.
- Don’t fret if you feel disoriented; it’s a common experience initially.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a moment, pick up your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
