Initially, arriving in London felt daunting because of its size and rhythm. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I experienced a sense of confusion. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before your time at Imperial starts, ensuring you can savor the city.
Whether you’re arriving early or just before the semester begins, here’s the guidance I wish I’d received.
Secure your accommodation
It’s essential to arrange housing ahead of time to steer clear of pricey hotels. I was lucky, but not everyone is. Opt for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long travel times.
Essential tasks upon arrival
When you arrive, tackle these necessary tasks:
- Transferring money – as an international student, consider utilizing apps like Wise or Revolut for budget-friendly transfers.
- Acquire a UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data access and navigation.
- Set up a bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and friendly for students.
- Obtain your student ID card – crucial for access to campus facilities, library services, and for discounts.
Your first week at Imperial matters
Your initial week is key for connecting with flatmates, peers, and making friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved.
Smart travel in London
At first, I walked nine kilometers around London. Instead, acquire a Student Oyster card for travel discounts. Walking remains an excellent way to find hidden treasures.
Discover your cozy spots
London can be a lot to handle. Identify a place of comfort, like a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and rejuvenate.
Get out and explore!
Acquaint yourself with nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, and parks. Explore landmarks, visit museums, and embrace impromptu adventures.
Final recommendations before starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid additional charges.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket for breezy days.
- Join in on unique events for unforgettable experiences.
