Stepping into London for the first time was quite an experience. The city appeared immense, noisy, and fast-moving. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s how to arrange your life in London before you begin at Imperial, so you can fully enjoy being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I’d been given.

Secure a Place to Live

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by sorting out housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone will be, as the top choices disappear quickly. Aim for a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent extensive travel times for morning lectures.

Important Life Administration

Upon your arrival in London, focus on these tasks:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – navigating a new city without data is challenging. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after you land.
  • Bank account – some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Establish an account for daily expenditures and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.

Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you’ll meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led organizations and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re on the shy side, attempt to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest companions during campus tours and society gatherings. This week shapes the foundation for your university journey.

Smart Travel in London

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers to explore. It was unforgettable but quite chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can be a bit emotionally intense. Having a favorite spot is beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my residence and the local O2 for movies. Identify your own locations, like a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, where you can unwind and recharge.

Explore the City

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining spots.

Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for the experience. Some of your fondest memories will come from moments of getting a bit lost!

Final Suggestions

  • Carry a reusable bag to avoid charges for single-use options.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective against the wind.
  • Join unique events – they create fantastic stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone does initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
