Arriving in London for the first time was a captivating experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and rapid in its rhythm. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to ease your transition into life in London before beginning at Imperial, ensuring you can relish the city.
Whether you come early or right before the term starts, here’s what I wish I had known during my initial arrival.
Secure your accommodation
Avoiding costly hotel bookings requires securing your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that experience. Prime options are snatched up quickly, so aim to locate a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy travels for your early classes.
Administrative necessities to address
Upon reaching London, promptly handle these responsibilities:
- Fund transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy method for transferring funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one at once for data and navigation in your new environment.
- Banking – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer rapid and student-friendly services. Establish an account for routine transactions and part-time job earnings.
- Student identification card – vital for accessing campus services, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
The significance of your initial week at Imperial
Your first week holds great importance for your student experience. It’s an opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, engaging in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you feel reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I formed bonds with some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your opening week lays the foundation for your university life.
Navigate London wisely
In my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London, lacking knowledge of the Tube or buses. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains the finest way to experience the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures along the journey.
Identify your comfort zones
London can be emotionally intense. Having a sanctuary is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I go daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just a short 10-minute distance, where I enjoy a movie weekly.
Discover your own retreat spots, whether it be a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and rejuvenate.
Discover the city
Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore complimentary museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and meander without a fixed plan. Some of your best experiences will arise from getting slightly lost!
Additional advice before starting at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag – stores impose a charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas struggle against wind.
- Participate in unique events – they create memorable stories.
- Don’t worry if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal at the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything figured out from the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
