Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t fret. Here’s how to get your life in London set up before you embark on your journey at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new city life.
No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or just before classes commence, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.
Secure Your Accommodation
Arrange your housing well in advance to steer clear of pricy hotel stays. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The top choices are snatched up quickly, so aim for somewhere close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long journeys for early classes.
Crucial Life Administration
Take care of these essentials shortly after landing in London:
- Money transfers: As an international student, find a dependable and cost-effective method to send money from home. Services such as Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
- UK SIM card: Obtain one promptly to ensure you have mobile data for navigation in a new city.
- Bank account: Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and any part-time job payments.
- Student ID card: This is vital for entering campus facilities, libraries, and receiving student discounts. Obtain it as quickly as possible.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial is significant. It’s the time you’ll meet flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to engage. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Travel Wisely in London
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, and I ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. Don’t make the same blunder. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover and enjoy the city’s hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can be quite daunting initially. Having a comfort zone can be beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my residence and the local O2 for movie outings. Discover your own haven, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the areas around your campus and residence. Locate your nearby supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots. Explore well-known landmarks, visit museums, and enjoy the city without a specific agenda. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering aimlessly.
Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
- Buy a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can be ineffective in breezy conditions.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s common for everyone at first.
You don’t need to have everything sorted by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
