By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing
Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, bustling, and full of energy. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you are about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London prior to starting at Imperial, so you can relish your new city life.
Whether you arrive days beforehand or just in time for the semester, here’s the advice I wish I would have received upon arrival.
Secure Housing First
Prevent pricey hotel expenses by organizing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The top selections get booked swiftly! Seek a place close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy travel to early classes.
Important Administrative Tasks
Once you’re in London, promptly handle the following:
- Money transfers – For international students, platforms like Wise or Revolut provide trustworthy and cost-effective currency exchange.
- UK SIM card – Crucial for navigation and communication. Obtain one right after your arrival.
- Bank account – Online banks such as Monzo or Starling are friendly to students and quick to set up. You’ll require an account for daily expenses and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is vital for entering campus facilities, libraries, and availing student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.
Maximize Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial holds great significance. It’s the time you’ll get to know flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week activities, delve into over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and register for those that pique your interest.
Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to engage. I did, and met several of my closest companions during campus tours and society gatherings. This week lays the groundwork for your university adventure.
Travel Wisely in London
During my initial week, I strolled nine kilometers across London, without grasping how the Tube or buses functioned. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically.
Walking remains the best method to soak in the city’s culture and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover Your Go-To Spots
London can feel overwhelming, particularly at the beginning. Having a familiar place helps. Mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. I also frequent the O2 weekly to relax with a movie.
Find your own refuge, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.
Discover the City
Get to know the neighborhoods around campus and your residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favored dining or coffee locations.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus for the view. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a bit!
Final Advice Before Beginning at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – Stores charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas don’t hold up against gusts.
- Participate in unique events – They make for great stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – It’s normal initially.
You don’t need to have everything sorted by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
