By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing

Stepping into London for the first time was quite daunting due to its size and rapid pace. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain where to start. If you’re about to face this, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adapting to your new life in London prior to your studies at Imperial, so you can relish your time in the city.

Regardless of whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just shortly before the semester commences, here’s the advice I wish I had when I arrived.

Secure Housing First

Prevent costly hotel expenses by arranging accommodation early. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone as the prime options tend to vanish quickly. Strive to find a location close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line to minimize long journeys for early classes.

Crucial Life Admin

Handle these vital tasks as soon as you land in London:

  • Money transfers – International students need a trustworthy and budget-friendly method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Obtain one right away to have data for navigation in an unfamiliar area.
  • Bank account – Some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and make it easy for students. Establish an account for regular transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – This allows you access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as possible.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved with Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and partake in activities that capture your interest.

Even if you feel timid, make an effort to engage. I did and found dear friends during campus tours and society booths. Your first week lays the foundation for your university adventure.

Travel Wisely in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London to explore. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. Discover hidden treasures by meandering around.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing, especially at the start. Having a comforting location can help – mine is a local park I visit daily to unwind. My second favorite place is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I regularly watch movies to relax.

Seek your own spaces, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge in the bustling city.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with the areas you’ll frequent near campus and home. Pinpoint your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee outlets.

Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus for the scenery. Walk aimlessly; some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting slightly lost.

Final Suggestions for Beginning at Imperial

  • Bring a reusable bag – shops typically charge for single-use ones.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas may not hold up against the wind.
  • Participate in unusual events – they create wonderful stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common at first.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better place than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
