Upon my initial arrival in London, the city appeared to be vast. Everything was noisy, hurried, and somewhat intimidating. With merely a suitcase in one hand and Google Maps in the other, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself facing a similar situation, there’s no need to be anxious. Here’s how to set your new life in London on a successful path before commencing your studies at Imperial, so you can relish your new experience in the city.

Whether you come weeks in advance or just right before the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had been given upon my arrival.

First priority: secure a place to stay

Prevent overspending on hotels by organizing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone will be, as the prime options are snapped up quickly! Aim to find accommodation near the campus or close to a dependable Tube line – early morning lectures can be quite challenging if you’re more than an hour away.

Managing essential life tasks

There are several important matters to address right after you arrive in London:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, it’s essential to have a trustworthy method for transferring funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – lacking data can hinder your navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan as soon as feasible.
  • Bank account – some banking institutions may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Open an account for your everyday transactions and any part-time employment.
  • Student ID card – this is vital for accessing campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Obtain it at your earliest convenience.

The initial week at Imperial is paramount

Your inaugural week at Imperial is of utmost significance. It’s the time when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enlist for activities that pique your interest.

Even if you feel shy, encourage yourself to engage. I did and ended up meeting some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

In my first week, I was puzzled by the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic – don’t replicate my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains the most effective way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. There are hidden treasures in London that you will uncover by wandering.

Establish your comfort zones

London can be quite overwhelming, particularly at first. Identifying a comforting spot is beneficial – for me, it’s the nearby park where I go daily for peace and reflection. My second comfort zone is the O2, just a 10-minute journey where I enjoy weekly movie viewings to relax.

Discover your own havens like a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench. These areas for unwinding and rejuvenating are more valuable than you might realize.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent near campus and home. Locate your local supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite spots for meals or coffee.

Explore iconic landmarks. Use your weekends to wander through your new city. Visit free museums. Take a ride on a red double-decker bus for a scenic view. Stroll around aimlessly. Many of your most cherished memories will come from a bit of wandering!

Final tips before you immerse in Imperial student life

  • Get a reusable shopping bag – stores often impose charges for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t provide enough coverage in windy conditions.
  • Embrace unconventional events – they often yield the greatest stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences that at first.
