Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city felt immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was disoriented. If you are about to go through this, rest assured. Here’s a guide to acclimating to London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish your new urban lifestyle.

Regardless of whether you come several weeks in advance or just prior to the semester, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

First things first: secure accommodation

Prevent expensive hotel stays by organizing your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. The most desirable spots go quickly, so aim for one close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for your early classes.

Administrative tasks: addressing the necessary basics

Once you’re in London, take care of these essentials without delay:

  • Currency transfers – as an international student, consider using services like Wise or Revolut for economical currency conversion.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one promptly to ensure you have data for navigation in unfamiliar neighborhoods.
  • Banking – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater well to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – vital for entering campus buildings, utilizing libraries, and accessing student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.

The initial week at Imperial is the most significant

Your opening week at Imperial holds great importance. It’s the time to meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential lifelong friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in what intrigues you.

Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and formed lasting friendships during campus tours and club events. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading to a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically.

Walking remains the finest approach to soak in the city’s culture and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your safe havens

London can feel daunting, especially at the beginning. A go-to place for comfort can be beneficial – mine is a park near my home. I visit it every day to unwind. Another favorite is the nearby O2, where I catch movies weekly.

Discover your own retreats, be it a cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

And remember to venture out!

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Explore local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and cherished eateries.

Tour iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the sights. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from spontaneous explorations.

Final pointers before immersing yourself into Imperial student life

  • Grab a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use alternatives.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas struggle in windy conditions.
  • Embrace unique events – they lead to fantastic stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s normal at first.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. By reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was upon commencing at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco excursion at a time.
