Initially, arriving in London was quite daunting. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s how to kickstart your new journey in London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish the novelty of being in a new city.

Whether you arrive ahead of schedule or just prior to the term commencing, here’s the guidance I wished I had received upon my arrival.

Secure housing

Book your accommodation early to steer clear of pricey hotel fees. I was lucky, but not everyone shares my fortune. The prime options disappear quickly, so strive for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Life admin: vital matters to address

Once you’re in London, attend to these vital matters without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, pinpoint a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut tend to provide more favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one right away to gain data access for navigation in unfamiliar surroundings.
  • Bank account – online banks like Monzo or Starling offer swift service and are student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – this allows entry to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.

Significance of your inaugural week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I found some of my dearest friends during campus tours and society stands. This week lays the foundation for your university adventure.

Getting around London: smart travel

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses. That said, walking remains a wonderful way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Discover your safe havens

London can be quite overwhelming, notably at the start. Identifying a comforting place helps – mine is a nearby park where I frequently unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another favored spot for catching a film. Discover your own refuges, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

Wander around the city

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffeehouses. Visit iconic landmarks, explore cost-free museums, ride a double-decker bus, and meander without a route. Some of your fondest memories will stem from moments spent getting a bit lost.

Final pointers before commencing at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag – retailers usually charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are often ineffective against strong winds.
  • Participate in unique events – they yield fantastic tales.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s perfectly normal at the beginning.

You won’t have everything sorted out by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
