By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing
Stepping into London for the very first time, the city seemed vast, noisy, fast-moving, and somewhat intimidating. With a suitcase in one hand and Google Maps in the other, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to face this situation, there’s no need to fret. Here are some tips to ease into your new life in London before you begin at Imperial, allowing you to make the most of the city.
Whether you arrive early or just before the semester commences, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.
Secure Accommodation
Unless you wish to blow hundreds on hotels, book your housing in advance. I was lucky, but many are not, as the top choices disappear rapidly. Go for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Administrative Tasks: Must-Do Essentials
After arriving in London, tackle these essential tasks without delay:
- Transferring money – as an international student, find a dependable, cost-effective method to move funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better currency exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data access and navigation in unfamiliar territory.
- Bank account – certain banks may demand a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and favorable for students. Get an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.
- Student ID card – crucial for entering campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as possible.
The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student journey. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, coursemates, and potential friends. Engage with Welcome Week to investigate over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and enroll in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society tables. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university adventure.
Getting Around London: Smart Travel
During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, ultimately walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for economical Tube and bus travel.
Walking remains the finest way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. You’ll stumble upon hidden treasures just by exploring.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can feel overwhelming, especially at the start. Having a go-to place helps – for me, it’s a park nearby my home. I visit it daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I relax with a film weekly.
Discover your own comfort areas, like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to refresh and recharge.
Get Out There!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll visit regularly around campus and at home. Locate your local supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.
Explore iconic sites, visit free museums, take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus, and roam without a specific plan. Some of your fondest memories will stem from wandering aimlessly!
Final Advice Before Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – retailers frequently charge for single-use plastic bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often can’t withstand strong winds.
- Be open to unique events – they create memorable stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences that initially.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
