Stepping into London for the first time was an exhilarating experience. The city felt vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you’re facing this experience, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adapting to your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, allowing you to fully relish your time in the city.
No matter if you arrive early or just prior to the term commencing, here’s the advice I wish I’d known upon my arrival.
Secure Your Accommodation
To bypass costly hotel expenses, arrange your housing as early as possible. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the top choices are snatched up quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Essential Household Matters
Upon arrival in London, promptly tackle these essentials:
- Money Transfers: As an international student, identify a trustworthy, budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide advantageous exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card: Acquire a UK SIM card with data without delay to navigate the city efficiently.
- Bank Account: Open a bank account swiftly for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs. Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are accommodating for students.
- Student ID Card: Retrieve your student ID card to gain access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts.
Significance of the Initial Week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student life. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies, and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to get involved. I formed some of my dearest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.
Smart Travels in London
At first, I was not acquainted with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. Sidestep my error by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.
Nevertheless, walking remains a phenomenal way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can be emotionally intense, particularly at the outset. Having a comfort zone assists – mine is a local park where I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie weekly.
Discover your own comforting spaces, be it a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to relax and rejuvenate.
Wander the City
Acquaint yourself with commonly frequented spots around campus and your residence. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations.
Explore iconic landmarks, check out free museums, and enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from spontaneous escapades.
Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas often fail against wind.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel a bit lost initially – it’s perfectly normal.
You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
