Stepping into London for the first time was a whirlwind of emotions. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re on the verge of this experience, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before embarking on your journey at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new urban lifestyle.
Whether you’re arriving ahead of schedule or right before the term begins, here’s the insight I wish had been shared with me.
First and foremost: secure your accommodation
Book your lodging well in advance to steer clear of costly hotel charges. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Seek a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, as long journeys are not ideal for early morning lectures.
Administrative tasks: managing essential matters
When you reach London, focus on these priorities:
- Money transfers – as an international student, explore budget-friendly options for transferring funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide attractive exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one swiftly to ensure you have data and navigation in your new surroundings.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Create an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time work.
- Student ID card – vital for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.
Your inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal
The first week at Imperial is fundamental. It’s when you will connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, attempt to engage. I made lasting friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week shapes the foundation for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was a memorable yet chaotic experience. Acquire your Student Oyster card and claim the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Walking remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover your sanctuary
London can feel overwhelming. Identify a comforting spot, such as a local park, for unwinding and rejuvenating. For me, it’s a park near my residence and the O2 for films. Seek out your own favorite places, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench.
And remember to explore!
Acquaint yourself with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favored dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and relish a double-decker bus ride. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from aimless wanderings.
Final suggestions before diving into Imperial student life
- Invest in a reusable bag – stores impose charges for single-use bags.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective in windy weather.
- Attend unique events – they offer unforgettable stories.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re perusing this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
